Autophagy was first used in 1963 to describe a process involving lysosomes. It was the Ciba Foundation Symposium on Lysosomes in London, in 1963, to be precise.
In 1974, Christian de Duve won a Nobel prize for the discovery of the lysosome.
Autophagy got into the news again in 2016 when Japanese researcher Yoshinori Ohsumi was given the Nobel prize in Physiology or Medicine. His autophagy Nobel Prize work with yeast cells led to a discovery of the mechanisms of the process.
So now we know how to induce autophagy.
How Autophagy Works
To keep it simple, think of the body as a big lego model. Autophagy is the process of taking sub-systems (cells) and taking it apart, down to its simplest pieces, and then re-assembling these base parts back into shiny new structures that are useful to the body. It happens in response to the threat of cell death, usually associated with nutrient deprivation, and lets the body make the best of unfortunate circumstances. Calorie restriction will stimulate this beneficial process.
The term autophagy literally means “self-devouring”, but it doesn't paint the full picture.

How Long Do You Have to Fast For Autophagy?
If you follow the advice of being in ketosis, there are signs that the repair process starts in as little as 12 hours of intermittent fasting. The longer you fast, the more pronounced the recycling process becomes.

As Dr Boz mentions, being saturated with carbs will make autophagy a lot harder to start. It could take days of fasting to get it started. If you follow the keto high fat diet, however, the autophagy process is very easy to start – simply by not eating for some number of hours will start the process.
Autophagy Fasting and the Role of Autophagy
The secret of fasting is finally understood by science. This lysosome and its autophagy recycling activity reveals how the body can rejuvenate itself, create itself anew and much more. There is pathogen removal, reduction of genotoxic stress, suppression of tumors, and more benefits.
Autophagy has a big role in biology. It reveals why gluttony is so dangerous to our health (accumulation of inflammation, disease, with no way to stop it).

The opinion of Phil Sanderson is to do a yearly fast with a low calorie beverage of lemon water, ceyenne pepper and 600 calories per day. The author does not agree this to be a fast, and recommends doing a fast with just black coffee, plain tea, and water with a teaspoon of either lemon juice or apple cider vinegar – to be used to reduce hunger pangs and keep you fasting longer.
Rapamycin and Autophagy
Rapamycin is a prescription pharmaceutical that suppresses mTor. MTor is known to be the opposite of fasting – if mTor is present, then autophagy does not happen. So Rapamycin will suppress the mTor and perhaps let autophagy start more easily.
It should be noted rapamycin, being a pharmaceutical product, may have side effects, so consider it with caution.
The best way to benefit from autophagy, as noted, is ketosis and intermittent fasting. Autophagy is important for keeping the body in perfect health.
Loose Skin and Autophagy
If you listened to Dr Boz's video above, you might have heard some very good news. Yes, autophagy will “fix” the loose skin you get with extreme weight loss.
That's right – get into autophagy while you are losing a large amount of weight, and your “loose skin” will be recycled into healthy tight skin. It is another reason why this process is good for reversing the aging process.
This self recycling process is also known as lysosomal self-degradation, since the body is breaking these down to make new things.

There's no guarantee you'll enter remission, but this self-eating process will definitely work to slow down any ill effects you are experiencing.
