Autophagy Definition

Autophagy was first used in 1963 to describe a process involving lysosomes. It was the Ciba Foundation Symposium on Lysosomes in London, in 1963, to be precise.

In 1974, Christian de Duve won a Nobel prize for the discovery of the lysosome.

Autophagy got into the news again in 2016 when Japanese researcher Yoshinori Ohsumi was given the Nobel prize in Physiology or Medicine. His autophagy Nobel Prize work with yeast cells led to a discovery of the mechanisms of the process.

So now we know how to induce autophagy.

How Autophagy Works

To keep it simple, think of the body as a big lego model. Autophagy is the process of taking sub-systems (cells) and taking it apart, down to its simplest pieces, and then re-assembling these base parts back into shiny new structures that are useful to the body. It happens in response to the threat of cell death, usually associated with nutrient deprivation, and lets the body make the best of unfortunate circumstances. Calorie restriction will stimulate this beneficial process.

The term autophagy literally means “self-devouring”, but it doesn't paint the full picture.

It's more like a recycling plant. Used old stuff goes in, broken down, and the output used to make new things.

Ketosis Autophagy

One of the wonderful facts about autophagy is how well it works in conjunction with a keto diet.

When you are in ketosis, and you begin intermittent fasting, the process of “self-devouring” is very easy to kick start. In most cases, just sleeping will initiate this repair/recycling when you are in ketosis.

If you are in ketosis, then you most likely can enjoy daily sessions of self-body autophagic cleaning by simply starting a 16 hour daily intermittent fast (or longer). Some people can manage to eat in a two hour window daily, which will give you even more benefits than an 8 hour eating window. Of course, being socially integrated is important, so if you are with people and they are dining, you might find some IF ratios are too extreme without drawing attention to you.

How Long Do You Have to Fast For Autophagy?

If you follow the advice of being in ketosis, there are signs that the repair process starts in as little as 12 hours of intermittent fasting. The longer you fast, the more pronounced the recycling process becomes.

Intermittent Fasting with Keto To Get Autophagy Started

Here's a good video from Dr Boz that discusses keto and how combining ketosis with intermittent fasting will induce the autophagic process daily.

As Dr Boz mentions, being saturated with carbs will make autophagy a lot harder to start. It could take days of fasting to get it started. If you follow the keto high fat diet, however, the autophagy process is very easy to start – simply by not eating for some number of hours will start the process.

Autophagy Fasting and the Role of Autophagy

The secret of fasting is finally understood by science. This lysosome and its autophagy recycling activity reveals how the body can rejuvenate itself, create itself anew and much more. There is pathogen removal, reduction of genotoxic stress, suppression of tumors, and more benefits.

Autophagy has a big role in biology. It reveals why gluttony is so dangerous to our health (accumulation of inflammation, disease, with no way to stop it).

Autophagy helps with organellar remodelling. It helps with protein quality control. It regulates immunity levels and reduces inflammation. Inflammation, by the way, seems to be the starting point for all diseases.

Autophagy and Intermittent Fasting

Many smart people are genuinely excited by the discoveries in autophagy. In particular, the autophagy fasting approach and how easy it is to start this beneficial recycling process in the body.

Here's a TEDx Talk video that exclaims it to be the path of physical transcendence:

The opinion of Phil Sanderson is to do a yearly fast with a low calorie beverage of lemon water, ceyenne pepper and 600 calories per day. The author does not agree this to be a fast, and recommends doing a fast with just black coffee, plain tea, and water with a teaspoon of either lemon juice or apple cider vinegar – to be used to reduce hunger pangs and keep you fasting longer.

Rapamycin and Autophagy

Rapamycin is a prescription pharmaceutical that suppresses mTor. MTor is known to be the opposite of fasting – if mTor is present, then autophagy does not happen. So Rapamycin will suppress the mTor and perhaps let autophagy start more easily.

It should be noted rapamycin, being a pharmaceutical product, may have side effects, so consider it with caution.

The best way to benefit from autophagy, as noted, is ketosis and intermittent fasting. Autophagy is important for keeping the body in perfect health.

Loose Skin and Autophagy

If you listened to Dr Boz's video above, you might have heard some very good news. Yes, autophagy will “fix” the loose skin you get with extreme weight loss.

That's right – get into autophagy while you are losing a large amount of weight, and your “loose skin” will be recycled into healthy tight skin. It is another reason why this process is good for reversing the aging process.

Lysosomal Self-Degradation

This self recycling process is also known as lysosomal self-degradation, since the body is breaking these down to make new things.

If you are looking for an autophagy inhibitor, them products like 3-methyladenine can be ordered, which suppresses the self-repair.

Autophagy Occurs In Which Organelle?

It occurs in the lysosome (see above).

Alzheimer's Disease and Fasting

One of the other exciting branches of research is how it can help with “incurable” diseases like Alzheimer's disease. It does this by getting rid of the junk in the brain – the fatty tissues that store toxins and impurities which are indicated as factors in this brain disease. This is true for all neurodegenerative diseases.

So this recycling of junk in the body, including toxins in the brain, means in addition to getting more mental clarity, you may actually slow or halt degenerative diseases like AD.

MTOR Autophagy

As noted, mTor and autophagy are opposite ends of the spectrum in the bodily processes. MTor is anabolic and building, and autophagy is catabolic and degenerative in nature. So you can not have both active at the same time.

Autophagy Cancer Findings

Since autophagy is a response to stress that is linked to breaking down tumors, there's good news for cancer patients. Just like the ancient Greeks prescribed, it is best to fast when you have cancer. Following the ketogenic diet and practicing fasting is a powerful weapon for anyone suffering from cancer cell disease, as the process will work to destroy the anomalous growths. There's no guarantee you'll enter remission, but this self-eating process will definitely work to slow down any ill effects you are experiencing.

Biochemistry, ATG3 and ATG7

If you are into the science, and are learning about how microautophagy is impaired in some aging situations, you might enjoy the technical article at Nature that discusses atg3 and atg7. It discusses some body processes that sometimes impair the auto-repair functions of the body.

Exercise and Fasting

One of the best kept secrets of intermittent fasting is to include low intensity exercise as part of your routine. Taking the stairs, taking a walk, doing a light aerobic workout, or calisthenics or light weight workouts all do a great job at boosting metabolism and activity in the body. When this recycling process is active in the body and you get more damaged cells recycled, really good things start happening.

Steps To Get Started

Now that you have all this information at your disposal, you can live in the best way possible. By avoiding vegetable fats, following the keto diet, doing some intermittent fasting (and eventually some multi-day fasts), you'll enjoy the maximum effects from this beneficial natural cleansing process. Your body has many wondrous abilities and by following this simple advice, you can unlock the path to perfect health.
